Smoke Tree Farm, a hunter/jumper/equitation boarding facility, is situated on 80 scenic acres, twenty minutes northwest of Syracuse in the Town of Lysander. Smoke Tree Farm has been owned and operated by the Van Patten and Smith families since the 1950's. Robert Smith and his daughter Diane have been active in the New York show scene for many years. Smoke Tree presently provides boarding services for approximately 30 active show Hunters.

The Smith family's life-long involvement in the NY horse show arena gives them the ability to manage a boarding facility which caters to the needs of the show horse. These services include, but are not limited to:

Lesson Program

Smoke Tree Farm offers lessons for all levels of riders; beginners through advanced, and can provide proven lesson horses for those who do not want to own or lease a horse.

STF’s lesson program is anchored by Denise VanPatten who has ridden horses all of her life. As a youngster she started riding saddleseat and then western, although the majority of her time in the saddle has been spent following the AHSA hunter/equitation circuit. Denise’s primary responsibilities are to teach students and to school horses boarded at STF or that are sent in for training.

Denise is assisted by other gifted instructors at the farm, making us one of the best all-around lesson programs in the area. Denise also coaches the Syracuse University Equestrian Team, as well as travels to the intercollegiate horse shows with the team.

Our purpose at Smoke Tree is to have the rider become successful at horsemanship, while learning to work as a team member, and have fun doing so.

Horse Shows

Smoke Tree Farm's horse show schedule has something for everyone. The beginner/novice rider can show at the local level, including shows sponsored by STF. The more advanced rider can show at American Horse Show Association sponsored shows. We travel across New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont to attend rated shows.

Throughout the year, Smoke Tree Farm offers both mounted and unmounted clinics. The mounted clinics are taught by various educators and successful horsemen, and are open to all levels of riders. We offer these clinics at reasonable prices, so that all students can become better riders. Un-mounted clinics include topics such as bandaging horses, general first aid, setting courses, clipping, mane pulling, lunging, tack cleaning, etc. We cover topics that help all riders become better horsemen.
